The art of loving your spouse, and how to cope when you can't
Says Dr. Damgaard-Hansen, whose work has been profoundly influenced by the insights of Christian personalism:
My aim is not to offer another round of "how to's" when it comes to being a better lover. A more down to earth approach - in my opinion - but also a bit tougher, is to help people discover how and when they are un-loving, and then help them do something about that.
Gollum too, is a fitting example of addiction.
His 'precious' literally annihilates his personhood--splitting his personality into 2: such that he can no longer say 'me' but only 'we'.
In other words, he is not free to exercise an "I-Thou" relationship of persons, but pitifully, "we-it"
I argue that addiction does precisely this: objectifies the personal dimension of reality, such that everything to the addict can only be viewed in relation to the object, "it". Persons themselves are merely means to the end of possessing "it". It is nothing short of slavery to the "precious"
