Re: The problem with "consenting adults"

Thanks to Katie and all the others for their ideas and comments.  I am still learning!  As the father of 4 daughters and 4 granddaughters, this is very pertinent. As the oldest child from a family of 5, I know my parents expected more from me (and I resented that at times).  There was no doubt, however, that I had a certain prestige and more priveleges as the top dog in the house.  I like Katie's thoughts along these lines . . .   a helpful piece for me to read and ponder.

Thank you.

Devra - all I can say is "wow"!  You knocked it out of the park today!  You and Max are gifted with words and manage to articulate the half-baked thoughts of folks like me- who ASPIRE to write so brilliantly and may, on occasion, write a piece that others find insightful or helpful.  Your gifts enkindle my own aspirations and I hope someday to be in your league.  Keep writing.  You have the GIFT!

Thank you.

A very good observation, Devra - one that most of us have to learn (again and again).  I absolutely love the music of Keith Green, whose anti-Catholic sentiments surprised most of my Christian and Catholic friends alike.  I said "I buy his music, not his theology".  Every human being has something good to offer us - even if they are heretics or "anti" something important to us.  It takes many of us a long time to realize that we have the capacity to sort out the things that other people present to us.  Take what is good and leave the rest.

Devra - thank you for another thought-provoking reminder to celebrate the Savior's birth and not get caught up in the culture wars and never actually honor the occasion itself.

Devra - this is very profound and edifying.  C. S. Lewis wrote about this (even though he was not Catholic - he died "!0 years too soon" someone once remarked before talking his way into the Church).  We must not airbrush over the faults of our heroes.  That's wny I loved the book "Saints Behaving Badly".  Jesus told French mystic Gabrielle Bossis "A Saint is not a saint all the time".   We are all "in process". Some of us get farther than others.  Some are canonized as martyrs for the faith, even though their life was far from virtuous.  There are a lot of ways to "steal Heaven".  Grace makes it possible.
